Before 1960, Gujarat and Maharashtra were one state, which was called Bombay State.
The people were mostly Gujarati and Marathi speaking.
The Marathi people strongly demanded a separate state where Marathi pride and culture would be reflected.
For which the Marathi people started the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, after which the Bombay Reorganisation Act was passed by the Government of India on 1st May 1960 and the state of Maharashtra was formed.
The state of Maharashtra was born on 1st May 1960. Since then, 1st May is celebrated as a festival to recognize the glorious culture and heritage of Maharashtra.
